Children Of The New World

"Pluto was discovered as recently as 1930 . . .'' Pluto, they say, is the harbinger of death and rebirth; Pluto is coming into its own; Pluto is casting a lengthening shadow upon the affairs of human beings.

As ruler of death and rebirth, Pluto is recognized to be a particular potent force during these rare ages when the planet is at large in Scorpio, its own sign of sex and death.

Astrologers the world over have already branded the imminent Pluto/Scorpio age as being fraught with potential more magnificent and more terrifying than history has ever known.

Geological upheaval, economic collapse, nuclear war, wondrous technological innovation and the transformation of global consciousness are seen as distinct possibilities — the death of the old bringing on the birth of the new.

For if Pluto has a cosmic mission it is to provoke the release of the enduring from the transitory and the outworn . . .

Pluto represents the unconscious — individual and collective — and governs forces buried deep in the psyches of human beings and nations. Along with many of her contemporaries, American astrologer Isabel M. Hickey maintains that the planet's obscure energy is at work behind the restlessness, chaos and confusion of the modern world.

She feels that Pluto's transit through Scorpio will ensure the elimination of "ancient wrongs and evils" by touching off "a purging such as the world has never known."

Astrologers have elected the oncoming Pluto/Scorpio transit as the most likely time for Pluto to display, most ruthlessly, its reincarnation power.

The planet could be said to be spinning towards a sort of global bardo state, forerunner of the much-vaunted Age of Aquarius. Laurel Lowell, a cousin of the American astronomer Percival Lowell, co discoverer of Pluto, wrote of the years 1984-1995:

Anguish born of regenerative forces seems to be inevitable: the so-called lower self must give way to the higher if all the adverse laws of karma are not to take effect. The soul is at stake.
