I received that from one of our readers.

"What we know as the World Wide Web was developed by Tim Berners-Lee.
Biographical note: http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/Longer.html

It was his decision to DONATE this to humanity, and to forego taking a royalty for every copy of the software. Hence the development of the web as a free and universally-accessible system depends entirely on the generosity and its continued existence is dependent on the will and persistence of this man, and on the enforceability of copyright law under which he holds moral and legal authority.

Note: due to foregoing the royalty which could have made him richer than Bill Gates, Berners-Lee doesn't have deep pockets. So the attempts by various companies to circumvent copyright law by tweaking the concept in order to make a new internet under their control will be driven and manipulated by all sorts of clever, well-funded ploys.

His contribution is well known and recognized, though that doesn't prevent powerful interests from trying to undermine what he gave us.

Excerpt:
"I have to play the visionary leader role from time to time and I play it as best as I can with the advice of my friends," he says. "But when it comes to the way it works now, I feel I'm a little dot in the western arm of the galaxy. I'm very aware there are lots of other people who are just bright and working just as hard, with just the same dedication to make the world a good place." -- Berners-Lee, quoted in Telegraph article.

That sums up the spirit of the man, I think.

TBL and a consortium of concerned professionals are continuing their efforts to protect the free, universal World Wide Web on which we've all been able to play for the past decade. We've taken it for granted. Your report on hacking points out this is under threat:

Most people are only just realizing that this tool of freedom and human-to-human community building is under threat of hostile takeover. Pay more, get less -- the usual advertising scam that Billy G. used to sell Microslop's minimal, buggy systems and rip off Steve Jobs' GUI (developed for the Mac).

TBL and associates have been aware of the hostile takeover of the net and opposing it for some time. See his post of June 2006 on the necessity of "net neutrality":

(It's worth reading closely. I recommend posting this link on your hacking thread.}

Please give Tim Berners-Lee and his consortium a good BOOST, and specifically send THANKS and LOVE for opening this door through which some daylight could break into a dark world situation. We owe him big-time. He says he doesn't have great qualities, but is being over-modest -- like most higher beings, probably...

Thanks also for your continued spiritual action. Best wishes for a free and empowered 2007."
